Elementary Math Club at Heartland

About 20 third, fourth, and fifth graders have been meeting weekly to learn math in a program called Bedtime Math’s “Crazy 8s” Math Club.  The students are actively learning math topics such as Geometry, estimating time, measuring distances, decoding clues, finding rate of an object, and probability.   Some of the lesson topics are spy training, toilet paper Olympics, flying marshmallows, zip line zoo, and bouncy dice numbers.   This is an 8-week program designed to generate more interest in math at an early age and also help students to not fear math but enjoy and improve their problem-solving skills.  The materials were provided by the Bedtime Math organization at no cost to the school district.  At the end of the program, students will take home a tape measure, stopwatch, and other supplies.  The after school math club is led by Kim Hiebner, Carrie Regier, Laura Smith, and Margalee Thomas with extra support from Jennifer Buller.
