Veterans Day Program

On November 12, Heartland Community Schools hosted the annual Veterans Day Program.  The school and communities would like to thank Mr. Best, Superintendent of Schools, for organizing and presenting the program.  The Colors and “Pledge of Allegiance” were presented by members of Cub Scout Pack 131. Ms. Brooklyn Epp, a senior at Heartland, sang the “Star Spangled Banner.”

As part of the celebration, students in grades fourth to twelfth were given the opportunity to take part in an essay contest sponsored by Henderson State Bank, who generously donated prize money for two divisions and gave awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place within each division.   Students in grades fourth to sixth, wrote about the topic, “Why I Honor The American Flag.” Students in grades seventh to twelfth wrote about the topic, “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.” Winners of the contest included; Braelynn Renz and Cheyenne Danielson. Second place winners were; Riley Quiring and Grade Regier.  Third place winners included; Bobby Mason and Anastasia Vazquez. Elementary students in grades kindergarten through third grade competed in a coloring contest. Fourth to sixth grade students created posters to be judged. The winning poster was from the fifth grade.

Under the direction of Heartland’s Vocal Music Teacher, Mr. Hall, students in grades third and fourth sang, “In Flander’s Fields.”  The National Honor Society members recognized all Veterans that were present at the ceremony though a personalized introduction.  A highlight of the program was Mr. Best presenting Bradshaw resident, Mr. Don Klute a “Quilt of Valour.” A “Quilt of Valour” is an award to those who have been touched by war.  It says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valour” in serving our nation. At the end of the program, the Colors were retired and everyone in attendance sang, “God Bless America.”  All Veterans received a heartfelt handshake and expressions of thanks by Heartland students following the program. Veterans and their families then enjoyed a reception in the cafeteria at the conclusion of the morning’s events.
