Heartland students competed at the ESU 6 Quiz Bowl Competition last week in Seward. The 30+ teams were divided into three divisions based on school size. Heartland was in the medium school division.

The morning consisted of round robin matches used to seed the single elimination tournament bracket used in the afternoon. When the bracket was filled in, Heartland had earned the 4th and 9th seeds. The second team faced a team from Centennial and was unfortunately eliminated. The first team beat Fillmore Central and then faced the number one seed, Malcolm A, who had beaten them handily in the first match of the day. The team members were not intimidated and defeated them with their highest point total of the day.

The victory set up a championship match against the Malcolm B team. At the end of the twenty question round, the Huskies had secured a 105-40 win for the gold medal.

The ESU competition is equivalent to districts in athletics and is used to qualify for the state championships. Unfortunately the ESU is only allowed to send two teams, and they had three championship teams. Based on the scoring from each of the final rounds, it was determined that Heartland would compete in a final state qualifying match against the small school division winning team from Nebraska Lutheran.

The match was close from start to finish, but when the final points were awarded the Huskies had been defeated 90-75.

The team’s next competition will be on Monday March 18, when they travel to SCC in Milford to compete in the SNC Tournament.
