Heartland Robotics Receives Awards at State Competition

Two Heartland robotics teams competed in the Nebraska First Lego League Competitions on March 20 and 21. According to the website, “The Nebraska FIRST LEGO League Challenge, coordinated by Nebraska 4-H, is designed for students in grades 4–8, typically ages 9–14. This program involves teams building and programming LEGO-based robots to solve real-world problems.”

Representing Heartland was the LandLords team including fifth grader Hudson Blum and sixth graders Theo Huebert, Landon Thieszen, Emily Mierau, James Janzen, and Sophie Schlautman. They are coached by Katie Waegli.

The Big Brain Burritos Reheated team is composed of seventh graders Grace Goertzen, Leo Goertzen, Tori Buzek, and Nate Kroeker. Eighth graders include Tori Thieszen, Micah Haidle, Ryker Stebbing, and Jack Bearinger. They are coached by Carrie Regier.

At the event, the teams gave their project and robot presentations. They also competed against each other in a robot game. Other highlights included touring Raikes School of Computer Science and Management and completing an activity with remote control cars protecting a treasure with cardboard, tape, and scissors only. The students also enjoyed UNL Dairy Store ice cream!

Congratulations to the LandLords for being nominated for a Motivate Award and a Nebraska Innovation Award.

Heartland Alumnus Cody Brown also received an award for five years of judging the competition.
