Heartland Participates in Math Competition
Four Heartland scholars spent their Saturday traveling to Lexington to participate in the very first Mu Alpha Theta Math Competition to be held in the state of Nebraska!
The day started with a mental math test that required the students and sponsors to answer as many questions that they could in 8 minutes without writing anything down. Then the students and sponsors took a speed math test that required answering 25 questions in 15 minutes with penalties for incorrect answers. Before lunch, the students were divided into three groups based on the math classes they have taken to take a written test that consisted of 30 questions to be answered in 90 minutes.
The last competition of the day was a team competition. Its hard to describe the process, but students were given 25 questions in each of five math subjects and were given 30 minutes to answer as many as possible. It was a very chaotic process!
The day concluded with the awards ceremony.
Mia competed in the Theta division and earned the runner-up medal on the written test.
Awards were given to the sponsors and Heartland fared well with Mrs. Ruhl placing 2nd and Mrs. Buzek winning the competition!
It was a long day filled with a lot of math and more laughs than you would think.
The schools in attendance included: Scottsbluff, Wahoo, Bellevue West, Heartland Lutheran, Heartland Community, and Lexington.
I continue to be impressed and proud of these students and their commitment to academic achievements. Great job Huskies!
