It was a busy week for the Heartland quiz bowl team. On Wednesday, November 12, the team traveled to Central City for their general knowledge quiz bowl tournament. There were 43 teams competing, and unlike other tournaments, the teams were not divided based on school size. The teams each played three matches in the morning, and then they were divided into three brackets based on their performance.

The A team earned the #5 seed in the Gold bracket and the B team earned the #12 seed in the Silver bracket. The B team ended the day with a 0-4 record with losses to Nebraska Christian, Seward, and two losses to the Silver bracket champion team from David City. The A team finished the day with a 3-1 record with victories over Dorchester, East Butler, and Central City. They were eliminated from the tournament by the team from Nebraska Christian.

On Thursday, seven quiz bowl team members traveled to Lincoln to participate in the 35th annual Math Day on the UNL campus. The Heartland students competed as two teams in the math bowl competitions. Both teams ended the day with a 2-2 record.

The A team had victories over teams from Verdigre and Wilber-Clatonia and lost to the teams from Omaha Marian and Rock County. The B team defeated the teams from Sterling and First Baptist and lost to the teams from Omaha Duchesne Academy and Blair.

In addition to the quiz bowl format competition rounds, the students were able to attend the Keynote speaker, Po-Shen Loh, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University as well as participate in an escape. The highlight of the day was eating in the cafeteria at Harper Hall.
